History of Decatur (Georgia)

Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is the county seat of Dekalb County. Decatur is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, and its public transportation is served by three MARTA rail stations. The city is home to several institutions of higher learning, most notably Emory University and Columbia Theological Seminary.

The city’s name is from the Latin word for “ten,” a reference to the AtlantaDecatur railroad line that connected the two cities. Decatur was founded at the crossroads of two Native American trails, the Sand Mountain Trail and the Peachtree Trail.

The area that is now Decatur was first settled in 1823 by William McLane, who built a cabin on the site of the presentdayDecatur Square. McLane moved his family to Decatur in 1824, and the town was formally chartered as a city in 1833.

In 1847, the Georgia General Assembly voted to move the state capital from Milledgeville to Atlanta. This resulted in a period of rapid growth for Decatur, which became a hub for transportation and commerce.

However, the American Civil War put a halt to this growth, as the city was captured by Union forces in 1864. After the war, Decatur slowly began to rebuild, and by the early 1900s it had regained its position as a major commerce center.

Today, Decatur is a thriving city with a vibrant downtown, a strong sense of community, and a rich history.
