History of De Smet
In the early 1800s, the area that is now De Smet was mostly uninhabited prairie. The first settlers to claim land in the area were two men from Ohio, one of whom was named Seth Rollin. In 1835, Rollin and his business partner, James De Smet, built a cabin on the banks of a small lake. This lake, which is now called Lake De Smet, became the center of the newly formed town.
The town grew slowly at first, but its population began to increase in the 1840s as more and more settlers arrived. By 1850, there were around 50 people living in De Smet. The town continued to grow throughout the 1850s and 1860s, and by 1870, its population had reached nearly 500.
During the 1870s, De Smet became known as the “Little City of the Prairie.” This nickname was earned due to the town’s thriving economy and its large number of wellbuilt homes and businesses. De Smet was also home to a number of schools and churches, which made it a popular destination for families.
In 1881, the first train arrived in De Smet, furthering its development. The following year, the first bank was established in town. In 1884, De Smet was officially incorporated as a city.
The early 1900s were a period of great growth for De Smet. The city’s population nearly doubled between 1900 and 1910, reaching nearly 1,200. This growth continued throughout the twentieth century, and by the year 2000, De Smet’s population had reached 2,897.
