History of Dayton (Tennesee)

Dayton is a city in Rhea County, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 7,191, making it the county seat of Rhea County.

The community was initially settled circa 1830 by David Crockett and his family. It was formally incorporated in 1877. Dayton’s early settlers were mostly farmers of English, Scottish, Irish, and German descent.

The city’s strategic location along the Tennessee River made it a target of both Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War. On November 24, 1863, Ulysses S. Grant’s army of 30,000 invaded Tennessee and captured Chattanooga. The Confederates retreated to Georgia. General James Longstreet set up his headquarters in Dayton on September 18, 1863, after being defeated at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was soon joined by Generals Braxton Bragg and John Bell Hood.

The city was occupied by Union troops on February 16, 1865. The Union army remained in Dayton until the end of the war.

After the war, the city’s economy was revitalized by the construction of several factories. The city’s population grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Wrights built and flew the first powered airplane on December 17, 1903, halting on a Dayton beach to make repairs. The siblings conducted additional tests at their Miami Bike Shop and revealed their invention to the world on April 16, 1908, at Huffman Prairie, now within WrightPatterson Air Force Base.

From 1925 to 1927, Dayton was the site of the Scopes Trial, also known as the “Monkey Trial.” Biology teacher John Scopes was indicted for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution in violation of state law. The trial drew national attention and put Dayton in the spotlight.

In the decades following the trial, Dayton remained a center of manufacturing and innovation. In World War II, the city’s factories manufactured B17 and B24 bombers for the war effort.

The city’s population continued to grow in the postwar years. The WrightPatterson Air Force Base was established in 1948, and the city’s population exploded. The base is now the largest singlesite employer in Ohio.

In recent years, Dayton has revitalized its downtown area. New hotels, restaurants, and shops have opened, and old buildings have been renovated. The city is now a destination for tourists and business travelers alike.
