History of Daventry
Daventry is a market town and civil parish in Northamptonshire, England. It is situated on the River Nene, at a crossroads of the A425 and A361 roads. The town has a population of 25,026,[1] making it the fourth most populous in the county. The town is twinned with the Dutch town of Schijndel. The town grew rapidly after the construction of the M1 motorway, which linked it to London and Birmingham. Businesses such as Sunbeam appliances and Rank Hovis built large factories there.[2] The town was granted borough status in 1974 and governed by Daventry Borough Council until 2021.
The town’s name is derived from the Old English for ‘town on the River Divet’. The earliest known settlement in the area dates back to the Iron Age, when a small hillfort was built on the hill now known as Borough Hill. In the 1st century AD, the Romans built a fortified settlement known as Danuvincium, from the Celtic tribe that inhabited the area. The town was destroyed in the Boudicca Rebellion in AD 60, but was rebuilt and flourished under the Romans. When the Romans left Britain in the 4th century, the town was taken over by the AngloSaxons. Daventry was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and grew rapidly in the 12th and 13th centuries. It became a market town in 1287 and was given the status of a borough in 1537. The town was affected by the English Civil War, when it was occupied by Royalist troops.
Daventry continued to grow in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the coming of the railways in 1845 and the construction of the Grand Union Canal in 1858.
