History of Darien (Georgia)
The city of Darien is located on the state’s southeastern coast and is the county seat of McIntosh County. The city has a population of just over 1,000 people and is the smallest city in the state. The city is notable for being one of the first planned cities in the United States and was founded in 1736 by James Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia.
The city was named for a town in Scotland and was originally intended to be the colony’s capital.
