History of Darien (Georgia)

The city of Darien is located on the state’s southeastern coast and is the county seat of McIntosh County. The city has a population of just over 1,000 people and is the smallest city in the state. The city is notable for being one of the first planned cities in the United States and was founded in 1736 by James Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia.

The city was named for a town in Scotland and was originally intended to be the colony’s capital. However, after the British government refused to allow Oglethorpe to bring slaves into the colony, he moved the capital to Savannah. Darien remained an important port city, however, and grew to become one of the largest cities in the colony.

The city was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War and held for a short time. It was later recaptured by American forces and became a part of the new United States.

During the Civil War, Darien was occupied by Union troops and used as a base of operations against the nearby Confederate city of Brunswick. After the war, the city returned to its role as a major port city.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Darien saw a boom in its economy due to the timber and seafood industries. The city grew rapidly during this time and many of its historic buildings were constructed.

The city declined in the mid20th century as the timber and seafood industries declined. Darien has since reinvented itself as a quaint, historic coastal city and is a popular tourist destination.
