Darien is a town in Fairfield County, in the southwestern corner of Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,732 at the 2010 census.
The town is one of the wealthiest communities in the U.S. As of early 2017, the town had the highest median home sale price in Connecticut as well as the highest per capita income in Fairfield County.
Darien is situated between the cities of Stamford to the north and Norwalk to the south. Its coastline of Darien is along Long Island Sound.
There are three public beaches in Darien: Weed Beach and Woodland Beach which have lifeguards during the summer, and Tokens Beach which does not. There is also a private beach, Tokeneke Beach, which features a club with dining, tennis and swimming facilities.
The Downtown area of Darien is home to many boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, and cafes. The Town Hall, Darien Library, and the Post Office are also located downtown.
The PotterStewart United States Courthouse is a historic building on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse is the setting for much of the action in the 1971 legal thriller The Exorcist.

History of Darien (Connecticut)
The area now known as Darien was first inhabited by the Mattabesec Indians, who were part of the Algonquin group. These Native Americans lived in wigwams and fished in the waters off the coast of what is now Stamford. They were eventually pushed out of the area by the Mohawk Indians, who came to the area from the west.
The Mohawk referred to the area as “P tablespoon”, which meant “open land”. The area was then purchased by the Dutch in 1640, who renamed it “Darius”. It remained under Dutch control until 1654 when it was annexed by the English. The name was then changed to “Darien”.
The town was officially incorporated in 1802. During the Revolutionary War, Darien was a hotbed of patriot activity. The town was also the site of a major battle during the War of 1812.
In the late 19th century, Darien became a popular summer haven for wealthy families from New York City. This trend continued into the early 20th century. Darien also developed into a commuter town, as many residents began working in New York City.
Today Darien is a thriving community with a population of over 20,000. The town retains its smalltown feel, while still offering residents access to all the amenities of a big city. Darien is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including UTC, Keurig and Tokeneke.
