History of Danville (Virginia)
The city of Danville, Virginia is located in the southern part of the state about 30 miles from the North Carolina border. It is the county seat of Pittsylvania County. The area was first settled by English colonists in 1732. The town was named for Daniel Dowd, one of the original settlers. It officially became a city in 1833.
Danville became a significant city during the Civil War. It was a major supply center for the Confederate Army and the last capital of the Confederacy. Confederate President Jefferson Davis made his final speech as President in Danville on April 3, 1865, just days before the surrender at Appomattox Court House.
After the war, Danville struggled economically. In 1882, the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad built a line through the city which helped to spur growth. The city developed as a manufacturing center with many tobacco factories and textile mills. It became known as the “City of Captains” because of the many Danvilleborn men who attained the rank of captain in the military or in business.
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century. It was home to several institutions of higher education, including RandolphMacon Woman’s College (now Randolph College) and Danville Regional Medical Center.
Danville has a number of historic landmarks and is the setting for much of author Sherwood Anderson’s novel Winesburg, Ohio. The city is also the birthplace of musician Cab Calloway and actor Gregg Henry.
