History of Danvers
The city of Danvers, Massachusetts is located in Essex County, about 25 miles north of Boston. It is part of the Greater Boston area. The city has a population of about 26,000 people.
The area that is now Danvers was originally inhabited by the Algonquin and Pennacook Native American tribes. In 1636, the first European settlers arrived in the area, led by John Endecott. The settlers built a fort on the site of presentday Salem. Salem became a successful town and the center of the region’s trade and shipbuilding.
In 1752, Salem built a new meetinghouse, which is now known as the Old Meeting House. The meetinghouse was the site of the Salem witch trials in 1692.
In 1769, construction began on a large mansion called The Manor, which was built for Judge Samuel Holten. The Manor is now a museum and is open to the public.
In 1786, the town of Salem was incorporated as a city. Salem continued to grow and prosper in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
In 1868, the township of Danvers was created from parts of Salem and other towns. The city of Danvers was created in 1925 from the town of Danvers.
Danvers has a long and rich history. It is a beautiful city with a lot to offer its residents and visitors.
