History of Dalton

Dalton is a city in northwestern Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Whitfield County and the principal city of the Dalton, Georgia metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Murray and Whitfield counties.

Dalton was founded in 1847 as the county seat of Whitfield County. It was incorporated as a city in 1847. The city’s name was chosen by Judge Daniel Hamilton, one of the area’s first settlers. It is believed that the city was named after General James Dalton, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

Dalton became a transportation hub in the late 19th century with the construction of the Chattanooga Railroad through the city. This led to the development of a number of factories in the city, most notably the carpet and textile industries.

The city’s fortunes declined in the early 20th century as the Chattanooga Railroad was rerouted away from Dalton, and the factories began to close. The city was hit hard by the Great Depression, and its population declined sharply.

In recent years, Dalton has experienced a resurgence as a regional center for the carpet and textile industries. The city has also become a popular tourist destination, thanks to its scenic location in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and its many historical and cultural attractions.
