History of Cuyahoga Falls
The history of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, begins with the construction of a small dam and sawmill on the Cuyahoga River in the early 19th century. The dam and sawmill were built by Joshua Stoddard, who also operated a gristmill and a tavern out of his home. In 1824, Stoddard built a twostory frame house, which is today the oldest standing structure in Cuyahoga Falls.
In 1834, Stoddard sold his properties to William Wetmore, who operated the mill for a time before selling it to Levi Johnson in 1839. Johnson expanded the mill, adding a woolen factory and a 30foot waterwheel. by 1841, the mill was powering 22 saws and had become the largest employer in the village.
In 1844, Johnson sold the mill to George and David Renner, who renamed it the Cuyahoga Falls Mill Company. The Renner brothers expanded the mill complex, adding a second woolen factory, a gristmill, and a distillery. The distillery was particularly successful, and at one point was the largest producer of whiskey in Ohio.
The Renner brothers sold the mill to Stephen Hickle in 1865, and Hickle operated it until 1868 when it was destroyed by a flood. Hickle rebuilt the mill, but it was again destroyed by a flood in 1869. Hickle did not rebuild the mill a third time, instead selling the property to Jacob Young.
Young built a new woolen mill on the site, which operated until 1884 when it was destroyed by fire. Young rebuilt the mill, and it operated until 1896 when it was again destroyed by fire. This time, Young decided not to rebuild, instead selling the property to Henry H. Cook.
Cook built a new paper mill on the site, which became the Cook Paper Company. The company operated until 1933 when it was forced to close due to the Great Depression. The property was then sold to the city of Cuyahoga Falls, which converted it into a municipal power plant. The plant operated until 1977 when it was decommissioned.
The property sat vacant for many years until it was redeveloped in the early 21st century. Today, the site is home to a hotel, a convention center, and a performing arts center. The mills themselves have been converted into apartments, retail space, and offices.
