Crown Point is a city located in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 27,317 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Lake County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.

The first European settlers in the region were French fur traders who arrived in the early 18th century. They settled on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, in an area now known as the Indiana Dunes National Park.

In 1834, Solon Robinson, a settler from New York, established a farm in the area. Robinson’s farm was known as the “crown jewel” of the region, and he later helped to plat the town of Crown Point.

The city was named for its strategic location at the crown of a ridge of sandy gravel that forms the south shore of Lake Michigan. The ridge, which is now the route of US Highway 12, was originally an old Indian trail.

In 1868, the City of Crown Point was incorporated. The following year, the court house was built. The city continued to grow, and by 1900 it had a population of over 5,000.

The city’s location on Lake Michigan made it a popular summer resort destination, and several large hotels were built to accommodate the tourists. Crown Point was also a stop on the Underground Railroad, and several abolitionists made their homes there.

The city’s popularity as a resort began to decline in the early 20th century, as tourism shifted to other parts of the country. The city’s economy was further impacted by the Great Depression and the decline of the auto industry.

In recent years, Crown Point has undergone a revitalization, with several new businesses and neighborhoods opening up. The city’s historic downtown is especially popular, with its brick streets and quaint shops.

Crown Point is also home to a number of historic sites, including the Lake County Courthouse, the Old Lake County Jail, and the Lake County Museum. The city also hosts a number of annual events, including the Summer Solstice Celebration and the Tour de Crown Point bike race.

History of Crown Point

Crown Point is a city in and the county seat of Essex County, New York, United States. The population was 7,374 at the 2010 census.

The first settlers arrived in Crown Point around 1759. The town was originally named after Fort Crown Point, a French fortress built in the area during the French and Indian War. The fort was later taken over by the British, and then the Americans during the Revolutionary War.

After the war, the town of Crown Point was officially established in 1786. The town grew steadily throughout the 19th century, and became an important center for iron and steel production.

In the early 20th century, Crown Point was a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The town’s fortunes changed during the Great Depression, however, and many of the grand homes and hotels were abandoned.

Today, Crown Point is a small city with a thriving downtown area. The town is home to several historic sites, including the Fort Crown Point State Historic Site, and is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping.
