Council Grove is a city in Morris County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,582 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morris County.
History
Council Grove is named after a grove of trees where the Lewis and Clark Expedition held a councils with the Kaw Indian tribe in 1804. They met to discuss the possibility of creating a peace treaty between the expedition and the tribe. The Kaw had been attacked by the Osage tribe, and the Lewis and Clark expedition wanted to protect them.
The first permanent white settler in the area was Moses Grinter, who built a log cabin in the grove in 1854. The cabin is now a museum. Council Grove was platted in 1857. In 1858, Council Grove was designated as the county seat of Morris County.
The city was a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1863, it was the site of a massacre of 11 German immigrants. The immigrants were killed by a group of Jayhawkers, who were antislavery vigilantes.
The Council Grove Bank was the first bank in Kansas, and it was established in 1865.
In 1868, the first schoolhouse was built in Council Grove. It was a oneroom log cabin.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,582 people, 1,064 households, and 656 families residing in the city. The population density was 572.1 inhabitants per square mile (220.5/km2). There were 1,207 housing units at an average density of 263.7 per square mile (101.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.4% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.

The city is home to the Council Oak Tree, which is where the Lewis and Clark expedition held a council meeting with the Native American tribes in the area in 1804. Council Grove is a city in Kansas. The population was 2,182 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1857 as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and is located on the Neosho River. It is home to the oldest water pump in continuous operation in the United States.
The first settlers of Council Grove were Native Americans. The Osage tribe used the area as a hunting ground. The Kaw (or Kansa) Indians also hunted in the area. In 1825, the Santa Fe Trail was created. The trail ran through presentday Council Grove. In 1842, the first wagon train traveled along the trail.
The first EuropeanAmerican settler in the area was John Williams, who built a log cabin near the Neosho River in 1844. He was soon joined by other settlers. In 1847, a post office was established. The first school was built in 1853.
In 1857, a group of businessmen from Missouri laid out the town of Council Grove. They named it after a grove of oak trees where the Native Americans had held councils. The same year, a stagecoach stop was built.
The Civil War caused many problems for Council Grove. The Santa Fe Trail was closed to traffic. This was a major blow to the town’s economy. Many of the town’s residents left to fight in the war.
