History of Corvallis
Corvallis, Oregon is a city in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States. The population was 54,462 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Benton County and the home of Oregon State University. The city is centrally located in the valley along the freeway between Portland and Eugene. Corvallis is the Latin word for “heart of the valley”.
The area that is now Corvallis was originally inhabited by the Marys River Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1800s led by fur trapper Alexander Ross. In 1845, the Corvallis Mutual Aid Society was established to help set up a community. In 1853, the Oregon Territorial Legislature created Benton County out of parts of Polk and Marion counties. Corvallis was chosen as the county seat.
The city was incorporated in 1857. The Oregon State Legislature established Oregon State University in 1868 as the state’s land grant college. The school pumpkin was introduced as the official mascot in 1946.
