History of Cortland
Cortland is a city located in Cortland County, New York. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 19,204. It is the county seat of Cortland County and the home of SUNY Cortland.
The City of Cortland is located in the central part of the county, surrounded by the Town of Cortlandville to the north, west, and south, and by the Town of Homer to the east.
The first settlers in the area arrived in 1791, intending to create a community on lands donated by Hugh Williamson. The town was officially founded in 1793 and named after Pierre Van Cortlandt, the Lieutentant Governor of New York.
The Erie Canal reached Cortland in 1823, providing the town with a boost in trade and commerce. The arrival of the railroad in 1849 further contributed to the town’s growth.
Cortland was incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a city in 1900.
The SUNY Cortland campus was established in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School. The school was renamed the State Teachers College at Cortland in 1929, and became part of the State University of New York system in 1948.
Cortland has a long history of manufacturing, beginning with the production of shoes in the late 18th century. The Cortland Wagon Company was one of the first manufacturers in the town, followed by the Cortland Carriage Company and the Cortland Buggy Company. More recent manufacturers include the McCauley Propeller Company and the Nestle Purina Petcare Company.
The city is also home to the Cortland Repertory Theatre, a professional summer stock theatre company that produces seven shows each season.
