As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 8, 409 people. Cortez is located just west of the 65,000acre Mesa Verde National Park, home of the Ancestral Pueblo people who created the dwellings that are now displayed in the park.
Nearby attractions include Hovenweep National Monument, McElmo Canyon, Yellow Jacket Pueblo, and Mesa Verde National Park. Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a short drive away.

History of Cortez
The City of Cortez is located in Southwestern Colorado and was established in 1886. The city was named after Spanish conquistador, Hernando de Cortes. At the time of its founding, Cortez was located in the heart of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe’s Reservation. The city served as a supply center for miners and ranchers in the San Juan Mountains.
In 1881, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad built a line through the area, which spurred economic growth and increased tourism. In 1900, the town had a population of about 500 people. By the 1920s, the town had grown to about 1,500 people.
The construction of Mesa Verde National Park in 1906 brought an influx of visitors to the area. The Park Service built a headquarters in Cortez in 1909. Today, Mesa Verde is one of the largest archaeological sites in the United States and a major tourist destination.
In 1955, the Four Corners Power Plant was built just outside of Cortez. The plant brought jobs and economic growth to the area. However, it also caused environmental problems, including air and water pollution.
Today, Cortez is a thriving community with a diverse economy. The City is home to Mesa Verde National Park, the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, and many other businesses and organizations.
