History of Corpus Christi
The City of Corpus Christi, Texas was founded in 1839 by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney as a deep water port on the Gulf of Mexico. Colonel Kinney also established the first newspaper, the Corpus Christi Caller, which is still in publication today.
Located on what is now called North Beach, the original town site was chosen because of its proximity to the bay and its fresh water springs. The newlyestablished Republic of Texas approved a charter for the City of Corpus Christi on January 6, 1839.
One of the city’s most notable early residents was General Zachary Taylor, who established his headquarters here during the MexicanAmerican War. After the war, Taylor retired to his nearby estate, which is now known as the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.
During the American Civil War, Corpus Christi served as a major port for smuggling arms and other supplies to the Confederate States of America. In 1862, Union gunboats shelled the city in an effort to block this activity.
In the late 19th century, Corpus Christi became a major sheep and woolshipping center. The city also attracted a number of immigrants, mostly from Italy and Germany.
