History of Coronado

Coronado is a small peninsula town located in San Diego County, California. The town’s name and Spanish heritage come from the early explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, who came to the area in 1602 and named it after the Spanish coronation city of Complutense de Madrid.

In the early 1800s, the area was home to Native American tribes, such as the Kumeyaay and Luiseno. These tribes were relocated by the Spanish missionaries, and in 1845, the area became part of the United States with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

In 1850, the town was officially founded as Coronado City, and in 1885, the famous Hotel Del Coronado was built. The hotel was used as a winter retreat for the wealthy, and over the years, it has been host to celebrities, Presidents, and royalty.

During World War II, the Hotel Del Coronado was used as a hospital for the United States Navy, and in the 1950s, the town became a popular beach destination for Southern Californians.

Today, Coronado is known for its smalltown charm, its luxury beachfront properties, and its strong community spirit. The town is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, parks, and museums, and its residents take pride in their historic hometown.
