History of Corinth
Situated on the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Pearl River, Corinth was once a bustling seaport town. Founded in 1823 by American settlers, Corinth soon became an important trading post for cotton and other goods. With its convenient location and strong economic base, Corinth thrived throughout the antebellum period.
The Civil War brought considerable hardship to Corinth. The town changed hands several times during the conflict, and was left in ruins by the time the war finally came to an end. Corinth did manage to rebound somewhat in the years following the war, but it never regained its former prominence.
Today, Corinth is a small city with a population of less than 15,000. Though it is no longer the thriving metropolis it once was, it still retains a certain charm and appeal. Visitors to Corinth can find a number of historic sites and buildings, as well as a number of recreational activities to enjoy.
