Sights in Cooperstown
Cooperstown, New York is a village in and the county seat of Otsego County. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is best known as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. It also has the Glimmerglass Opera, and the Farmers’ Museum.
The village was named after Judge William Cooper, who founded it in 1786. His son James Fenimore Cooper, author of The Last of the Mohicans and other novels, was born in Cooperstown in 1789.
The Cooperstown area was occupied by the Iroquois before the European settlement. They had a village on the east side of the lake, which they called Otsiningo. The first Europeans to settle here were a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania led by William Cooper, who purchased the land from the Iroquois in 1785.
The village was incorporated in 1807.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is the most popular tourist destination in Cooperstown. It opened in 1939 and honors the greatest players in baseball history.
The Glimmerglass Opera is another popular tourist destination. It is an professional opera company that produces four operas each summer. The company is based in the Alice Busch Opera Theater, which is located on the campus of the Fenimore Art Museum.

History of Cooperstown
In 1786, Colonel George Cooper founded Cooperstown on Otsego Lake. He developed it into a prosperous farming community and built a gristmill and sawmill. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Cooperstown became a popular destination for wealthy urbanites seeking refuge from the summer heat.
The Village of Cooperstown was incorporated in 1812. The state of New York purchased the surrounding land from the Iroquois in 1789 and Cooperstown was the first white settlement in the Leatherstocking Region.
During the 19th century, Cooperstown became renowned for its many healing springs, and it was also the home of the Cooperstown Medical College. In 1839, the college merged with Rutgers University.
The Farmers’ Museum was established in 1945, and in 1947 the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors in Cooperstown. Today, Cooperstown is a thriving village with a population of just over 2,000 people. It is home to the Glimmerglass Opera, the Fenimore Art Museum, and the Farmers’ Museum.
