History of Columbia (Mississippi)
Columbia, Mississippi, is a city in Marion County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 11,563 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County.
Columbia is the home of the University of Mississippi, the state’s flagship university.
The history of Columbia, Mississippi, began when the land was obtained from the Chickasaw in 1832 by the Choctaw and Columbia Railroad Company. The city was named after Christopher Columbus. The first White settlers in the area were John A. and Nancy Brown, who arrived in 1834.
In 1836, the Mississippi Legislature established Marion County, with Columbia as its county seat. The city was incorporated in 1839. Marion County was one of the first counties in Mississippi to be organized under the new state constitution.
During the Civil War, Union Army troops occupied Columbia in 1863. The town was sacked by Confederate troops in 1864. After the war, Columbia was rebuilt.
The University of Mississippi was established in 1848. It is the state’s flagship university and the largest in Mississippi. The school’s sports teams are known as the Ole Miss Rebels.
