History of Cohasset
Cohasset, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,542 at the 2010 census.
Cohasset was first seen by Europeans in 1614, when Captain John Smith explored the coast of New England. The area was first settled in 1670 and was originally part of Hingham. It was then incorporated as a separate town in 1770.
During the American Revolutionary War, Paul Revere rode through Cohasset on his famous “Midnight Ride” to warn the citizens of Lexington and Concord that the British were coming.
Cohasset was originally a part of Suffolk County, but became part of Norfolk County when it was formed in 1793.
The town’s name comes from the Algonquin word “Conahasset”, which means “long rock”.
Cohasset was home to the first lightship in the world, which was built in 1819. This ship, named the Prospect, was stationed at Boston Harbor to warn ships of the dangerous rocks nearby.
In the 19th century, Cohasset was a popular summer resort for the wealthy Bostonians. Many of the grand mansions from this era can still be seen today.
The Old Ship Church, which was built in 1717, is the oldest church in continuous use in the United States.
Cohasset is also home to the Cohasset Historical Society, which was founded in 1910. The society operates the Spindleworks Museum, which is housed in an old grist mill.
