Coffeyville is a city located in the southeastern corner of Kansas, United States. Coffeyville is located in Montgomery County, and with a population of 10,295 is the county’s most populous city. It is located mainly on the west side of the Verdigris River in the state’s southeastern corner, approximately 30mi north of the Oklahoma–Kansas border and 100mi south of downtown Kansas City.

The first permanent settlement in what later became Montgomery County was made at a point on the west bank of the Verdigris River in October 1869, when two log cabins were erected. This site was located about two miles (3km) northeast of the present city of Coffeyville, on a farm then owned by John W. Naylor. Coffey, one of the directors of the Marmaton and Missouri River Railroad Company. Colonel Coffey was instrumental in bringing both the Marmaton and Sante Fe Railroads to the city.

History of Coffeyville

Coffeyville is a city located in southeastern Kansas. The city had a population of 10,295 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and with its proximity to the Oklahoma border, it is also considered part of the Tulsa metropolitan area.

Coffeyville is most notable for being the site of two major historical events. The first occurred on October 5, 1892 when the Dalton Gang attempted to rob two banks in the city simultaneously. The attempt failed and all but two members of the gang were killed. The second event occurred on October 9, 1907 when oil was discovered in the city. The discovery led to a boom that lasted into the early 1920s. At its peak, the city had a population of over 30,000 and was home to more than 100 oil companies.

The city was named after colonel A. R. Coffey who founded it in 1869. The city grew slowly until the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in 1873. The railway brought both passengers and freight to the city and helped it to grow.

The city experienced its first major boom in the 1880s when coal was discovered in the area. The coal mines brought both jobs and prosperity to the city. The coal industry continued to be an important part of the city’s economy into the early 20th century.

The city’s second major boom came with the discovery of oil in 1907. The oil industry quickly took off and by the early 1920s, Coffeyville was home to more than 100 oil companies. The oil boom led to a population boom as well and by 1920, the city’s population had reached more than 30,000.

The oil boom came to an end in the early 1920s and Coffeyville’s population began to decline. The city’s economy diversified, however, and it continued to grow. The petroleum industry is still an important part of the city’s economy today.

Coffeyville is a city with a rich history. Its location has made it a crossroads for people and commerce for more than 150 years. The city has experienced its share of booms and busts but has always managed to rebound. Today, Coffeyville is a thriving community with a bright future.
