Coalville is a small city in Leicestershire, England. The city is located in the northwest of the county, within the National Forest. Coalville is twinned with the French town of La Loupe.

Heritage Centre and Museum The Heritage Centre and Museum tells the story of Coalville and district from Roman times to the present day. The museum has galleries on Coalmining, Industry, Transport and Community. There are also temporary exhibitions.
The Centre is located in the Market Place, in the heart of Coalville. The building dates from 1852 and was originally the Town Hall.
Snibston Discovery Park Snibston Discovery Park is a country park with a difference. As well as extensive walks and picnic areas, the park has a Discovery Centre with interactive exhibits on coal mining, wildlife and the environment.
There is also a Fossil Gallery with a collection of fossils from the local area. The park is located on the site of the former Snibston colliery.
Ashby de la Zouch Castle Ashby Castle is a wellpreserved medieval castle located in the nearby town of AshbydelaZouch. The castle was built in the 12th century and was the home of the Earls of Leicester.

History of Coalville
Coalville is a town in North West Leicestershire, England. The population at the 2011 census was 34,575.[1] It lies on the A511 trunk road between Leicester and Burton upon Trent, close to the M1 and M42 motorways.
The town was formerly a centre for coal mining, iron foundries and engineering; much of its 19thcentury industry has since disappeared. The economy of Coalville, while still dominated by quarrying, food processing and manufacturing, now includes distribution, public administration, retail and service industries.
Coalville is twinned with Barbaste in France and Oberursel in Germany.[2]
The first recorded use of the name Coalville is from 1316. It comes from the Old English for “coal mine” or “coal pit”, meaning that Coalville grew up around the local coalmining industry.
The earliest settlers in the area were the AngloSaxon farmers who cleared the forest to farm the land. They were followed by the Saxon miners who came to exploit the local coal deposits. In the Norman period, Coalville (then known as Coleville) was part of the Hundred of Goscote.
By the 13th century, Coalville was a small farming village with a population of around 100. It grew slowly into a market town, serving the needs of the local farming community. The first market charter was granted by King Henry III in 1257.
By the early 16th century, Coalville had grown to become a small town with a population of around 1,000. It was at this time that the coalmining industry began to develop and the town started to grow rapidly.
The first coal mine was opened in 1530, and by 1700 there were six mines in operation in the area. The demand for coal from the Midlands’ growing industrial towns ensured that the Coalville mines remained in operation until the early 20th century.
In 1750, the first iron foundry was established in Coalville, and by 1800 there were four in operation. The iron industry continued to grow throughout the 19th century, and at its peak there were nine iron foundries in Coalville.
The engineering industry also began to develop in Coalville in the 19th century. The first engineering workshop was established in 1820, and by 1900 there were more than 30 engineering firms in the town.
The growth of industry in Coalville led to an increase in population, and by 1881 the town’s population had reached 14,000.
In the early 20th century, the coalmining and iron industries began to decline, and Coalville’s industrial prosperity declined with them. However, the engineering industry continued to grow, and by the mid20th century Coalville had established itself as a major centre for engineering.
The town’s population grew steadily throughout the 20th century, and by the 2001 census it had reached 34,000.
Today, Coalville is a thriving town with a diverse economy. While the coal mines and iron foundries have long since closed, the engineering industry remains a major employer in the town. The town also has a growing retail and service sector, and is home to a number of distribution firms.
