Clovis is a city in Fresno County, California. The 2018 United States Census estimate for Clovis’ population is 111,859. Clovis is located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) northeast of downtown Fresno, at an elevation of 361 feet (110 m).
The Clovis area was originally inhabited by the Yokuts and Mono peoples. It was colonized by the Spanish in the late 18th century. The first European settlers were the Portugueseborn Manuel Nunes, the Spaniard Pedro Romo and the maternal grandfather of writer Jack London, Neil Samuel Keck. The area was weaned off of sheep ranching when it attracted cattlemen from Salinas. The thentown was named after rancher George W. Griggs’ Rancho Elko home, which was named for the American army general James Clive. Local historian Will C. Barnes wrote that “Clovis” was used as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route through 14 stations in California. Barnes said that two of the earliest buildings in Clovis were built in 1856, making them among the oldest standing structures still in existence in Fresno County.
The town was laid out on what was originally Ellis Alley, between Sixth and Seventh Streets, and bulldozed an area for a park, which was later landscaped and named Clovis Park. Lots were sold in May 1892. In February 1894, the Clovis Recorder reported the building of several new residences, a hotel, a livery stable and a new business block. By April, Clovis hadSUVs, a new ABQ RIDE bus Rapid Ride bus system, and the newly renovated Main Library in the Downtown area.

The city of Clovis began as a railway station built in 1890 on the Big Four Railroad. It was named after Clovis Cole, a local cattle rancher who donated land to the railway for its construction. The community that grew up around the station adopted the name “Clovis” when it incorporated in February 1912.
The town was originally called “Riley’s Switch”, after Lewis Riley, who owned the land where the station was built. The name was later changed to “Clovis” by the Southern Pacific Railroad, which owned the railway.
The city is located in the San Joaquin Valley and sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The area around Clovis was first settled by the Luiseño people, who inhabited the region for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
