Clifton, New Jersey, is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 84,136, making it the state’s 11thlargest city.[9][10][11]
The city was originally incorporated as a village on April 26, 1917, from portions of Acquackanonk Township and New Barbadoes Township. Clifton was reincorporated as a city on April 11, 1925, replacing Acquackanonk Township as a governmental unit. Portions of the city were taken to form Little Falls Township (April 14, 1926), Montclair Township (April 15, 1894) and Verona Township (March 19, 1892).[12][13]
What is now Clifton was originally acquired by the Dutch in 1673 as part of the township of Acquackanonk. The area was subsequently divided into three large farms, Vreedenburgh, Ackerberg, and Clifton, which were purchased by speculative investors before the American Revolutionary War. Johnathan Hampton, a delegate to the Continental Congress and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, was one of the earlier settlers of the area.[14]
The area that would become Clifton was initially developed for residential use, with large country estates and mansions built by wealthy New Yorkers looking for a place to escape the city. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, many immigrants from Italy and other countries came to the area and set up businesses, resulting in the development of a more urban character for the city. The city’s population exploded in the 1920s and 1930s as waves of immigrants came to work in the city’s factories and businesses. The Great Depression hit the city hard, but it recovered in the postWorld War II years.
Today, Clifton is a major destination for immigrants from Latin America and other countries, as well as a thriving multicultural community. The city is also home to a large number of businesses, both big and small. Clifton is truly a city of contrasts, with a rich history and a bright future.
