History of Cleburne
Legend has it that the city of Cleburne, Texas, was named after a Confederate General, Patrick Ronayne Cleburne. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. The earliest known reference to the city’s name is in a letter dated April 28, 1871, from J.J. Good, the town’s first postmaster, to the Postmaster General in Washington, D.C. In the letter, Good wrote, “The name of the office is Cleburne, named in honor of Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne…” So, it seems more likely that the city was named for the General, not the other way around.
Cleburne was founded in 1868, just three years after the end of the Civil War. The city was originally part of Johnson County, but became its own county in 1873. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the 1920s, Cleburne was home to more than 20,000 people.
The city continued to prosper during the Great Depression and World War II. After the war, Cleburne became known as the “World’s Widest and Longest Yard Sale,” as people would line up for miles to sell their wares.
In recent years, Cleburne has experienced significant growth. The population has more than doubled since 2000, and there are now more than 30,000 people living in the city. Cleburne is a welcoming and thriving community, with a rich history and a bright future.
