History of Cleator Moor
Cleator Moor is a town in Cumbria, England. It is located on the edge of the Lake District, in the unitary authority of Copeland. The town had a population of 5,076 in 2001.
The name Cleator is derived from the Old English cliffot, meaning “muddy streamfoot”, and refers to the River Ehen, which runs through the town. The Moor element refers to the moorland that surrounds the town.
The town’s history is closely linked to the iron and steel industry. In 1755, an ironworks was built at nearby Rowrah. This was followed by the construction of blast furnaces at nearby Egremont in 1779. The Cleator Iron Company was established in 1837 and the town’s first ever steelworks was built in 1856.
The iron and steel industry declined in the early 20th century and the last blast furnace at Egremont closed in 1930. However, the steelworks at Cleator Moor continued to operate until its closure in 1984.
Despite the decline of the iron and steel industry, Cleator Moor has remained a vibrant and thriving town. There are a number of shops, pubs and restaurants in the town centre, as well as a library, a health centre and a community centre.
