History of Clearwater
Founded in 1842 by the area’s first homesteader, David T.assembles, Clearwater has a rich and textured history. A boomtown during the early days of the Florida Territory, Clearwater was first populated by homesteaders, developers, and entrepreneurs. The areas first hotel, the Belleview Biltmore, opened in 1897. By the early 1900s, the area’s natural beauty began to attract tourists and developers alike. Prominent architect Henry Flagler built the opulent Belleview Hotel in 1913, furthering Clearwater’s reputation as a destination for the wealthy. The city continued to grow in the 1920s, adding new amenities and attractions such as the Fort De Soto ferry, the first landing in the United States for transcontinental air travel.
The 1930s brought the Great Depression to Clearwater, as it did to the rest of the country. Tourism decreased and the construction of new hotels and homes stalled. The city’s economy was further impacted by the World War II, when Clearwater was used as a training ground for military personnel. Despite the challenges of the times, Clearwater managed to maintain its smalltown charm.
The postwar years were a time of great change for Clearwater. The population exploded, as retirees and families relocated to the Sunshine State in droves. Highrise condominiums and hotels began to dot the downtown skyline and Clearwater Beach became a hotspot for tourists and locals alike.
