Cicero is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 24,853 at the 2010 census. Cicero is a suburb of the city of Syracuse.
The town of Cicero was established in 1792. Originally it included what is now the town of Clay, which separated in 1827, and parts of the towns of Salina and Lysander. The Town of Cicero is northeast of Syracuse.
Cicero has a long history dating back to before the American Revolution. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army encampment known as Fort Ann was located in Cicero. The Town of Cicero was also the home of Harper’s Ferry rifle works during the Civil War.
The Erie Canal passes through the town.
The first settlers in the Cicero area were predominantly Quaker families who came to escape religious persecution in England. Some of these families settled in the Village of Cicero, which is located in the central part of the town. The Village of Cicero was incorporated in 1834.

History of Cicero
Cicero, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago. The population is about 84,000. Cicero was founded in 1858 by John H. Crerar, a businessman from New York. The town was named after the town in New York where Crerar had lived. Cicero is known for being the site of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which was held at the International Amphitheatre.
The first permanent settlement in Cicero was made by a farmer named Asahel Clapp, who built a log cabin in 1837. Clapp later sold his cabin to John H. Crerar, who is considered the founder of Cicero. Crerar platted the town and soon other settlers began moving in. The first store in Cicero was opened by Thomas and Harriet Doughty in 1848. Cicero was incorporated as a village in 1852 and as a town in 1858.
Cicero grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1869, but regained its independence in 1887. By the 1920s, Cicero was one of the largest suburbs of Chicago. The town continued to grow in the second half of the 20th century, although its population has declined since the 1980s.
Cicero has a long history of gang activity. The first recorded gang in Cicero was the Hawley Street Boys, which was active in the 1890s. In the early 1920s, Cicero was the home of the Chicago Outfit, a crime syndicate led by Al Capone. The Outfit controlled the town’s politics and economy, and was responsible for a number of murders, including the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Cicero remained a major center of organized crime until the 1970s.
