It is the largest city in the Chillicothe, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area (which includes all of Ross County), and the center of the Chillicothe Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The first settlement in Ross County was established at Chillicothe in 1796, ten years before Ohio became a state. It was the first and only permanent capital of Ohio from 1803 until 1810 when the capital was moved to Zanesville for two years, then to Columbus. The name “Chillicothe” is a Native American word meaning “live lands” or ” 1070 feet”, referring to the elevation of the site above the southern bank of the Scioto River.

History of Chillicothe (Ohio)
The first inhabitants of the Chillicothe area were the Adena people. The Adena built earthen mounds for ceremonial and burial purposes, which can still be seen in Chillicothe today.
The Adena were followed by the Hopewell people. The Hopewell also built earthen mounds, but theirs were much more elaborate. The Hopewell people are known for their beautiful art, which they made from stone, bone, and shell.
