History of Chicago Heights
Chicago Heights is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,276 at the 2010 census. Chicago Heights is in the South Suburbs of Chicago.
The area now occupied by Chicago Heights was first settled in 1833. In 1839, the community was named Chicago Heights and was incorporated as a village in 1869. The following year, the village elected its first mayor, John Wright.
The city’s first school was built in 1854, and the first library opened in 1901. The city’s first newspaper, The Chicago Heights Star, began publication in 1892.
In 1925, the village of Chicago Heights elected its first AfricanAmerican mayor, Edward G. Butler.
The village of Chicago Heights became a city in 1927.
During World War II, the International Harvester Company’s factory in Chicago Heights was one of the largest producers of munitions for the war effort.
