History of Cheyenne
Arapaho Indians were the first to settle in the area known as Cheyenne in the late 1700s. They were drawn to the location by the abundant game and water resources. The Cheyenne later split off from the Arapaho and moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
In 1834, a group of fur trappers led by Robert Campbell established a trading post near the present day city of Cheyenne. This marked the first permanent white settlement in the area. The trading post was abandoned a few years later but was reestablished in 1858.
The civil war led to an influx of settlers heading west in search of new opportunities. Cheyenne became an important stop on the Pony Express and the first transcontinental telegraph line. The city continued to grow as a transportation hub with the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1867.
Cheyenne officially became a city in 1869. The population had grown to over 3,000 by this time. The city continued to grow rapidly, reaching a population of over 10,000 by 1880.
