Cheboygan is situated on the shores of Lake Huron at the mouth of the Cheboygan River. The urban area extends from the river mouth several miles upstream to the surrounding rural countryside.
The name of the city is derived from the French word petit meaning small, plus the Ottawa Indian word for swimming, as the Ottawa lived in the area when early French explorers arrived in the late 1600s.
Cheboygan’s nickname is the “Gateway to Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula.” Visitors are attracted to the city for its many marinas, fishing charters, and the Cheboygan State Park.
History of Cheboygan
The City of Cheboygan is a historic city located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. The area was first inhabited by the native Ojibwa people. The first Europeans to settle in the area were French fur trappers in the late 1600s. In 1741, the French established a trading post in the area, which led to increased settlement. In 1763, the area was ceded to the British after the French and Indian War. The British continued to operate the fur trade and also began to log the area’s extensive forests.
In 1837, the area was set off as Cheboygan County, the ninth county in Michigan. Cheboygan was designated as the county seat. A sawmill was built and the village of Cheboygan developed. In 1853, the county courthouse and jail were completed.
Cheboygan grew rapidly in the late 19th century due to the development of the lumber industry. Several major lumber companies operated mills in the area and logged the surrounding forests. The city became known as the “Lumber Queen of the World.” At its peak in the early 1900s, the lumber industry employed over half of the city’s residents.
The lumber industry began to decline in the early 20th century, due to the depletion of the area’s forests. The last major mill in Cheboygan closed in the 1930s. The city’s economy was further impacted by the Great Depression and the decline of the Great Lakes shipping industry.
