Charlevoix is on the shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Charlevoix River. The city is about 32 miles northeast of Traverse City and about 190 miles northwest of Detroit.

The area was first settled by Europeans in 1763 and was organized as a township in 1837. The township was later divided into three separate villages: East Jordan, Boyne Falls, and Charlevoix. Charlevoix was incorporated as a city in 1903.

Charlevoix has a long history of tourism, which began in the late 19th century when wealthy residents of Chicago and other Midwestern cities built summer homes in the area. Charlevoix also became a popular destination for sportsmen, who came to hunt and fish in the area. Today, tourism is still an important part of the city’s economy, and Charlevoix is home to several resorts, hotels, and bedandbreakfasts.
