History of Charleston (South Carolina)

Founded in 1670, Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and the country’s 74th largest municipality. With a rich colonial history and a wellpreserved architecture, the city has been nicknamed “The Holy City” for its large number of church steeples.

Early History

The first Europeans to settle in Charleston were English colonists in 1670. They established Charles Towne along the Ashley River. The name was soon shortened to Charleston to honor King Charles II of England.

The colony was not an easy one. Ashley River floods, pirate attacks, and Native American hostility made life difficult for the settlers. Despite these challenges, the colony slowly grew. By 1711, it was the fifthlargest city in North America.

The Revolutionary War and beyond

In 1776, Charleston was a hotbed of Patriot activity. The first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in the city, at Fort Sumter. The conflict would eventually leave Charleston in ruins.

After the war, the city was rebuilt. The population continued to grow, and Charleston became a major center of trade and culture in the South. The Civil War brought more devastation, but the city quickly recovered once again.

Today, Charleston is a thriving city with a rich history. Its historic district is a National Historic Landmark, and the city attracts millions of visitors each year.
