History of Charles Town

Founded in 1670, Charles Town now known as Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina. It was established by English colonists who were seeking religious freedom from the Church of England. Charleston quickly became a prosperous trading center, and by the early 1800s was one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Its prosperity was largely due to the slave trade; Charleston was one of the largest slave ports in North America.

The city was also the site of several important events in the American Revolution and the Civil War. In 1776, Charleston was the first city in the Colonies to declare its independence from Britain. And in 1861, Charleston was the first state capital to secede from the Union.

Today, Charleston is a booming tourist destination, known for its historic homes, beautiful gardens, and Southern hospitality.
