History of Charles City
The city of Charles City, Iowa is located on the banks of the Cedar River in northcentral Iowa. The city was settled in 1847 by a group of pioneers from Ohio, led by the Reverend George Douglas. The town was originally named after Charles Fisher, one of the settlers, but was later renamed Charles City after Charles Dickens, the famous English novelist.
The early years of Charles City were marked by a series of floods, including the Great Flood of 1851 which destroyed many of the town’s homes and businesses. Despite these setbacks, the town continued to grow and by the end of the 19th century was a thriving agricultural and manufacturing center.
Charles City’s most famous resident was Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman who lived in the town during the 1880s. Earp left Charles City in 1887, but returned briefly in 1896 to visit his sick brother Virgil.
