History of Castleford
Castleford is a town in West Yorkshire, England, on the River Calder and the Aire and Calder Navigation. The town had a population of 40,210 at the 2011 Census. Castleford is the site of a Roman settlement.
The name “Castleford” is derived from the castle built in the 12th century by William de Wakefield, son of the murdered Yorkshireman, Sir Robert de Wakefield. The castle was built on the site of an earlier Roman fortification. The town grew around the castle, with the first market charter being granted in 1294.
Castleford Bridge, over the River Calder, was built in 1430 and was the only bridge over the river until the construction of the Aire Aqueduct in 1797. The town was subsequently an important crossing point on the route between Leeds and Wakefield.
In the 16th century, the town was beset by religious feuds, and in 1548 the castellan, Sir Thomas Lister, was killed in a clash with supporters of the reformer Robert Aske. The town was also the site of a major battle during the Civil War, when Royalist forces defeated the Parliamentarians on Marston Moor, just to the east of the town.
The town continued to grow in the 19th century, with coal mining, iron foundries and textile mills providing employment. The Grand Junction Canal and the Aire and Calder Navigation, both of which pass through the town, made it an important inland port.
Castleford was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1889. In 1974 it became part of the Wakefield Metropolitan District.
It was home to the Castleford Tigers Rugby League team from 1896 until 2017, when they moved to a new stadium in the town.
