History of Casper
Casper is a city in and the county seat of Natrona County, Wyoming, United States. Casper is the secondlargest city in Wyoming, according to the 2010 census, with a population of 55,316. Only Cheyenne, the state capital, is larger. Located in eastcentral Wyoming, Casper is the principal city of the Casper, Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a 2010 population of 75,450. Casper is the headquarters of Wyoming’s oldest bank, and the economic center of the state.
Since the late 19th century, Casper has been a center of the petroleum industry in Wyoming. The city was founded east of the site of Fort Caspar, which was built during the 1850s to protect the new Mormon Trail emigrants on their way west to Salt Lake City, Utah. The fort was named for Lt. Colonel William F. Caspar, a Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was killed at the Battle of the Washita in Indian Territory in 1868. The city was founded during the Wyoming Oil Boom and at its peak had more millionaire citizens than any other city in the world.
The area was originally home to the Arapaho and Shoshone Indians. In 1867, Fort D.A. Russell was established in the area to provide protection for workers building the Union Pacific Railroad. The fort was later renamedFort Francis E. Warren and was the site of several infamous executions, including that of bomber Timothy McVeigh in 2001.
