History of Carthage (Missouri)
The city of Carthage, Missouri was founded in 1842 by Moses Austin and his son, Stephen F. Austin. It was named after the ancient Phoenician city of Carthage in Tunisia. The Austins had originally planned to settle in Texas, but Moses Austin died before he could complete his plans. Stephen Austin then brought his family to Missouri and founded the city of Carthage.
The city became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail, as it was located on the edge of the Ozarks and was a convenient halfway point between Independence, Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1864, during the Civil War, the Battle of Carthage was fought in the streets of the city. The Confederate Army, led by General Sterling Price, attempted to retake Missouri from the Union Army, but was defeated.
After the war, the city continued to grow as a regional center for agriculture and commerce. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, several major industries, including lead mining and glassmaking, thrived in Carthage.
