History of Carmel

When most people think of Carmel, they think of it as a wealthy, beautiful beach town in California. And while that is certainly true, Carmel actually has a long and rich history that predates its modern incarnation.

Carmel was first settled by the Ohlone people, who lived in the area for centuries. The first European settlers to arrive were Spanish missionaries, who founded the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo in 1770. Carmel soon became a thriving ranching and farming community, and remained so until the early 20th century.

It was around this time that Carmel began to transform into the picturesque town we know today. Artists and writers, drawn to Carmel’s natural beauty, began moving to the area in droves. Notable residents included author Upton Sinclair and painter Edward Hopper.

The City of CarmelbytheSea was incorporated in 1916, and its population continued to grow in the years that followed. In the 1950s and 60s, Carmel became widely known as a haven for literary and artistic luminaries, and remains so to this day.

Whether you’re visiting Carmel for its stunning coastline, worldclass dining, or simply to stroll through its quaint streets, it’s impossible not to be impressed by this oneofakind California city.
