History of Carlinville

Carlinville, Illinois is a city rich in history dating back to 1829 when it was first settled. The city is named after Thomas Carlin, the seventh Governor of Illinois. Thomas Carlin served as a colonel in the Black Hawk War and was later elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and then the Illinois State Senate. After serving as a circuit judge, he was finally elected as governor in 1838. He only served one term, but during that time he did much to improve the state of Illinois. He was a strong supporter of education and helped to establish the University of Illinois.

Sadly, Governor Carlin died in office in 1841 and was succeeded by his vice president, Augustus C. French. French was not in office long before he too died, making Carlinville the first city in the United States to have two governors die in office.

The city continued to grow and prosper, and in the early 1900s it was known as the “Milk Capital of the World” due to the large number of dairy farms in the area. Today, Carlinville is a thriving city with a population of over 5,000. It is home to Blackburn College, a private liberal arts college, and is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy the many historical sites and buildings, including the Macoupin County Courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
