Caribou is a city located in the state of Maine, in Aroostook County, and is the county seat. The population was 8,189 at the 2010 census. The city’s name comes from the French word for “reindeer”.

History of Caribou
Caribou was first settled in 1869, when a group of settlers from Presque Isle arrived in the area. The group was led by Frank Webber, who had been hired by the Maine Central Railroad to build a line from Bangor to the St. John River. Webber and his team built a station and began clearing land for a townsite. The town was initially called “Webber’s Station”, but was renamed “Caribou” in 1873.
The name “Caribou” is derived from the Mi’kmaq word for the animal, which was plentiful in the area. The town began to grow rapidly after the arrival of the railroad, and became an important junction on the line. By 1885, Caribou had a population of over 2,000, and was the largest town in Aroostook County.
The town continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, with the establishment of several manufacturing plants. However, the economy of Caribou was hit hard by the Great Depression, and the town went into decline. The population began to rebound in the 1940s, when the town became a major center for the defense industry during World War II.
After the war, Caribou continued to grow, reaching a peak population of over 7,000 in 1960. Since then, the population has steadily declined, as many residents have left the area in search of better economic opportunities. However, the town remains an important regional center, and is home to a number of businesses and cultural organizations.
