History of Canton (Illinois)
Canton is a city in Fulton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,713 at the 2010 census, up from 14,366 in 2000. Its mayor is Kent McDowell and its city clerk is Barb Baker.
Canton is located at 40°25′44″N 89°38′6″W (40.428889, 89.635000). According to the 2010 census, Canton has a total area of 12.96square miles (33.64km2), of which 12.89square miles (33.47km2) (or 99.46%) is land and 0.07square mile (0.18km2) (or 0.54%) is water.
Canton is home to two high schools, Canton High School and Spoon River Valley High School, both of which are part of Canton Union School District 303. Additionally, Illinois Central College, a community college, is located in Canton.
Canton was first settled in 1820 by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The first permanent settlers were Amos Froman and his family from Kentucky, who settled near what is now known as Froman’s Point. In 1822, Canton was officially platted by Samuel D. Marshall, and a post office was established the following year. The location of Canton was chosen because it was the halfway point between Peoria and BloomingtonNormal, as well as the halfway point between the Illinois River and the Mississippi River.
The first courthouse was built in 1823, and the first jail was built in 1839. The first public school was built in 1848.
