History of Canon City

Canon City is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Fremont County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 16,400 at the 2010 census. Canon City’s public schools attract many school choice students from around the state due to its wide array of Advanced Placement and dualcredit courses. Additionally, the city is home to both a community college and a university.

The area which is now Canon City was first settled by AngloAmericans in 1860, shortly after the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Originally known as minuscule Bureau of Land Management Community Reservations Office No. 7, the name Canon City was derived from a canyon nearby, part of the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River. In 1872, Canon City was incorporated, and in 1873 it became the county seat of Fremont County.

The Royal Gorge Bridge was completed in 1929 and was at the time the highest suspension bridge in the world. The surrounding area became popular for tourism, especially after the completion of the Royal Gorge Railroad. Within a few years, numerous other tourist Railroad lines were built in the Canon City area.

Mining has always played an important role in Canon City’s economy. In the late 19th century, coal and other minerals were mined in the area. In the 20th century, the area evolved into a center for the production of lime, cement, and coke. The Canon City area continues to be an important source of mineral extraction, with minerals such as mica, talc, and diatomaceous earth being mined in the area.

In recent years, tourism has become an increasingly important part of Canon City’s economy.
