History of Camden (South Carolina)
The city of Camden is located on the Wateree River in central South Carolina. The area was originally inhabited by the Catawba and Wateree Native American tribes.
The first European settlement in the area was established in 1732, when English settlers from Charleston established a trading post called Pine Tree Hill. The settlement was later renamed Camden, after Lord Camden, a British politician who was supportive of the American colonies.
During the American Revolution, Camden served as a strategic military location, due to its proximity to the crossroads of Highway 1 and Highway 521. The Battle of Camden, which took place in 1780, was a major victory for the British army.
After the war, Camden became a prosperous cottongrowing center. The city’s population grew rapidly, and by the mid19th century Camden was one of the largest cities in South Carolina.
Today, Camden is a small city with a population of less than 10,000. However, it is still a popular tourist destination due to its historic downtown area and its beautiful riverfront.
