History of Cambridge (Maryland)
Cambridge is a city in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,326 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dorchester County and the home of Hampton University.
The city was named for the English university city of Cambridge. The town was incorporated in 1854 and became a city in 1960.
Historically, Cambridge was an important center for the lumber and shipbuilding industries. The town was a key stop on the Underground Railroad, as many escaped slaves made their way to freedom in the Northern states.
During the Civil War, Cambridge was occupied by Union troops and served as a major supply depot. After the war, the town’s economy declined as the lumber and shipbuilding industries left the area.
