History of Calumet City

Calumet City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,042 at the 2010 census. A south suburb of Chicago, Calumet City was once known for its steel mills and manufacturing plants, but these have largely disappeared since the 1970s leaving only a few factories and plants remaining. The city is now mostly residential with some retail districts.

The history of Calumet City is tied to its location on the IllinoisIndiana state line along the Calumet River and the Grand Calumet River. The area was first settled by Native Americans who utilized the rivers for transportation and fishing. Spanish explorers arrived in the area in the early 16th century and eventually British settlers came in the early 18th century. The area was originally part of Lake County, Indiana but later became part of Cook County, Illinois.

The city itself was not officially founded until 1893 when it was incorporated as a village under the name of West Hammond. The name was changed to Calumet City in 1900. The reason for the name change is still a matter of debate but it is generally believed that it was done to attract more businesses and residents to the area.

Calumet City continued to grow in the early 20th century due to heavy industry locating in the city. These industries included steel mills, chemical plants, and other manufacturing businesses. The city also became a major gambling destination in the 1920s with several casinos and racetracks operating in the city.

The Great Depression and World War II resulted in a decline in the city’s fortunes as many of the businesses and factories closed. The city began to rebound in the postwar years with the opening of several new factories and the redevelopment of its riverfront.

The city has continued to grow in recent years with the addition of new businesses and residents. The city is now home to a number of different ethnic groups and is considered a diverse community. While manufacturing and industry are still present in the city, the majority of the jobs now are in the service sector.
