History of Cairo
Cairo, Illinois is a city in Alexander County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,831 at the 2010 census, and its mayor is Tyrone E. Coleman, Jr. Cairo has the southernmost tip of Illinois, and is one of the gateways to the Shawnee National Forest. It is located along the Mississippi River.
The first permanent settlement in the area that would become Cairo was established in 1818 by Capt. James Lemen, a prosperous keelboat captain from Kentucky. Lemen had first visited the area in 1816, and he liked what he saw. He returned in 1818 with his family and some friends, and they built a small village along the river.
Lemen’s Village became a busy little town, and soon other settlements sprang up nearby. In 1822, the Egyptian Canal Company was formed, with the goal of digging a canal from the Ohio River to the Mississippi. The canal would provide a shortcut for river traffic, and make Cairo an important river port.
Work on the canal began in 1825, but it was a difficult and expensive project. The canal was finally completed in 1839, but it was not a success. The river changed course and the canal silted up, making it useless.
Despite the failure of the canal, Cairo continued to grow. In 1858, the Cairo City and Wabash Railroad was built, connecting Cairo to East St. Louis. This made Cairo an important railroad junction, and the city flourished.
The Civil War hit Cairo hard. The city was a Union stronghold, but it was surrounded by Confederate territory. It was cut off from supplies, and many of its residents fled. The city was under siege for much of the war, and was shelled by Confederate guns.
After the war, Cairo slowly began to rebuild. The railroads were repaired and new businesses started. The city was once again a busy place.
In 1937, the Ohio River flooded, causing severe damage to Cairo. The city was flooded again in 1945 and in 1997. Each time, the city has recovered and gone on to prosper.
