History of Burlington (North Carolina)
Burlington is a city located in the northwestern piedmont region of North Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Alamance County, which is a part of the Greensboro–WinstonSalem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 51,906 at the 2010 census, which makes it the seventeenth largest city in North Carolina. The racial makeup of the city was: 64.0% White, 30.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.1% of the population.
The city was established in 1793 on the site of a small trading post called Corbin Town. The post was named after its owner, Ezekiel Corbin, and was located on the Great Indian Trading Path. Burlington was officially chartered as a city in 1866.
The city has a long history of textiles and furniture manufacturing. In the early 1900s, the city became a major producer of hosiery. Burlington Industries, founded in 1923, was the city’s largest employer for many years. The company produced a number of famous brands, including Ladybug, Baby Doll, and DaddyO. Burlington Industries was acquired by International Textile Group in 2003.
The city is also home to Alamance Community College, a twoyear institution of higher education.
